Graphite Fly Rod FAQ

What exactly is graphite?
To begin with, graphite blanks are not made from graphite! They are made from a variety of carbon fiber materials, all of which are some combination of scrim (cloth) and resin. They are combined and wrapped around a tapered steel mandril, then baked at a very high temperature. The actual materials used, the blank's wall diameter and taper, and other characteristics are determined by the designer prior to the manufacturing process.
What's all this about high modulus, fifth-generation graphite, etc?
Modulus is simply a ratio of strength to weight; the lower the number the heavier the blank for the same strength. The original "graphite" was fiberglas. The ingredients formula has been modified repeatedly over the years. Each time there is a significant difference, there is a new generation.
Does using a rod made from the latest generation graphite really make a difference?
It depends what you want. The latest blanks are very light, and they are very responsive. They don't suit everyone, and can be easily damaged. The overall weight changes significantly when you add the weight of the guides and the line when you are fishing and they usually require good timing in the cast. My personal preference is a less responsive rod made from a slighter older type of graphite. I find it suits me better for casting, mending (line control), and fighting a fish in almost every situation. .
